Busan's Festival Calendar: The 2026 Dates

Busan's calendar has a fixed shape

Most travel articles about Busan's festivals say that dates change every year and you should check closer to the time. That is true of the exact days, but it hides something more useful: the same set of events happens every year, in the same months, run by the same organization. The Busan Festival Organizing Committee publishes the whole slate, and once you know what is on it you can plan a year ahead even before the dates are confirmed.

There are roughly eight committee events, plus the film festival, which has its own organizer. Two of them — the film festival in October and the fireworks festival in November — are large enough to change hotel prices across the entire city. The rest are worth knowing about but will not dictate when you come.

What follows is the confirmed 2026 calendar. Treat it as the shape of any year: the 2027 equivalents will land in the same months, usually confirmed a few months ahead.

The 2026 calendar

The two that decide your hotel booking

The Busan International Film Festival runs October 6–15, 2026 — the 31st edition — centered on the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City with partner cinemas across the city. It fills Haeundae and Centum City for ten days, and the effect on accommodation is not subtle. Tickets are booked through biff.kr, and the booking windows open weeks ahead: galas went on sale on September 17 and everything else on September 21, both at 14:00.

The Busan Fireworks Festival is Saturday, November 7, 2026, the 21st edition, over Gwangalli Beach with Igidae and Dongbaekseom as the other official viewing areas. It is one day rather than ten, but it produces one of the largest single-day crowds in the city. Paid seating went on sale on September 4 at 14:00 and runs until November 6 at 17:00; the beach and the streets around it are free, and people arrive hours early for them.

The practical rule for both: if your trip overlaps either, book your accommodation far earlier than you otherwise would, and think about the journey home as much as the journey there. On fireworks night the metro out of Gwangan is the bottleneck, not the metro in.

What each season actually offers

Spring is the committee's lighter half. The Wheat Festival in early May at Hwamyeong Ecological Park and Taxchelin in late May, which spreads across the four old downtown districts, are both local-scale events rather than destinations — pleasant if you are here, not a reason to book. Spring's real draw is the cherry blossom, which is not a committee festival at all.

Summer belongs to the Busan Sea Festival, August 7–13 in 2026, held at Dadaepo Beach at the western end of the city rather than at Haeundae. It lands in the middle of the beach season and in the hottest week of the year, which is either the point or the problem depending on your tolerance — the weather guide has the numbers. The Port Festival in mid-June, on the redeveloped North Port waterfront, is the quieter alternative.

Autumn is the crowded half and the reason people fly in. The rock festival at Samnak Ecological Park on October 2–4 opens it, the film festival takes the next ten days, and the fireworks close it in November. Three big events inside six weeks, in the two months with the best weather in the year.

Winter is quiet by design, and that is its appeal — lower prices, empty beaches, and the city to yourself. The one fixed event is the bell-tolling ceremony at Yongdusan Park on New Year's Eve, which runs into January 1 and is the city's public new year gathering.

What is not on the committee's list

• Cherry blossom season, usually late March into early April along the Nakdong River and at Samnak Ecological Park. There is no fixed date — it depends on the year's temperatures, and forecasts appear a couple of weeks ahead
• Buddha's Birthday lantern displays at temples in May, including Beomeosa. The date moves with the lunar calendar
• District-level beach and neighborhood festivals, which are run by the individual district offices rather than the city committee and confirm their dates later
• Lunar New Year and Chuseok, which are not festivals to attend but do affect travel: trains sell out, many small restaurants close, and the night market shuts
• The Busan Biennale, a contemporary art event held in even-numbered years with its own separate schedule

How to plan around this

• Decide first whether you want to be here for an event or avoid one. Both are valid plans and they lead to opposite bookings
• If you want the film festival or the fireworks, book accommodation as early as you can and buy tickets the day booking opens — the good options go in hours, not days
• If you want good weather without the crowds, aim for late September or the second half of November: the same climate, none of the pressure
• Committee events are free to attend unless stated otherwise. The costs that bite are accommodation and paid seating, not entry
